Dentists and Dermal Filler Procedures

By Cleah Sphan

In numerous countries, it is very common that dermal fillers are used every day, in many cosmetic procedures. There are strict rules that govern the use of these compounds, and regarding who is qualified to administer the treatments, and the level of training necessary to do so. Until the recent past, this procedure was primarily performed by plastic surgeons or dermatologists. Dentists have also been licensed to deliver dermal fillers in certain states in America, in order to treat certain kinds of conditions.

Here we will examine what is involved for dentists who are licensed to treat patients using dermal fillers.

Some brief information on dermal fillers.

A natural component in human skin is hyaluronic acid, and this is what dermal fillers are mainly comprised of. Wrinkles and lines are formed in our faces as we get older because there is less hyaluronic acid in the skin. Skin can look much more youthful and refreshed after wrinkles and lines are reduced using dermal fillers. The lips are another area where these fillers can be used, as lips can be enhanced this way.

Dentists and dermal fillers

The debate about dermal fillers being administered by dentists is ongoing at this time. The argument against them doing so discusses their insufficient knowledge of the facial anatomy given that their training is primarily concerning the oral cavity. If you were to ask a dentist you would get a different answer, as during their training an intensive knowledge in the musculature of the face is needed as they relate to dentistry procedures.

Prescription and administration of dermal fillers by dentists has now been approved by the California dental board. The certification has been applauded by dentists, as they firmly believe in their qualifications to deliver these dermal filler treatments. However, there are limitations to what it can be used for with the board clearly stating that dermal fillers can be used by dentists as long as it is used for dental therapeutic purposes. Furthermore, proper training is essential before being permitted to inject them.

The guidelines vary between states. Dentists in Georgia are allowed to inject dermal fillers after a 21 hour training course, as dictated by the Georgia Dental Association, and only for dental reasons.

Limitations involved

Dermal filler injections appear to be more and more accepted in states in the United States according to a dental board review, but it is limited to being used only for therapeutic dental related issues. The injection of dermal fillers for cosmetic reasons or for non-dental related problems is considered unprofessional conduct and may even be illegal. In every state, a dentist must look at the rules that are in place regarding the injection of dermal fillers, and if they are certifiable, to seek out reputable training on the procedures.

Summary

As time goes on, the art if dentistry advances greatly, and cosmetic procedures do the same. Dentists are now allowed to inject dermal fillers for dental related procedures but appeared to be still limited with what they can do when it comes to cosmetic reasons. Dental boards may in fact allow dentists in time to treat patients using dermal filler injections for cosmetic reasons, but dentists must refer to the stipulations set up by the boards in their state of origin at this time for guidance on this.
