Learn Tai Chi With These Basic Moves

By Stacey Burt

Tai Chi has always been regarded as a way to be able to increase health and boost the immune system because of its slow movements and its relaxing nature. Now in this martial art, there are two aspects that one would look at namely the internal aspect and external aspect. If one would want to learn tai chi, then he would have to learn both of these aspects.

Now before going to the physical aspect of the art, one has to first concentrate on the internal or the health aspect because if one is healthy, it will reflect on the outside. So one of the most important things that one would have to take note of would be the breathing. Proper breathing is an integral part of the art because it will give one energy as well as make him strong.

Now if one would want to harness his chi, he has to first be able to control his breathing and breathe through his abdomen. To do this, he has to first inhale and fill his abdomen with oxygen. After he does this, he should breathe our and deflate his stomach so that carbon dioxide comes out.

Now one has to make sure that he will be breathing like this all the way because he would need it when he does the forms. So after one has already gotten the hang of the breathing, then he can learn some of the stances of the art. The stances are very important because one is in a stance the whole time he is practicing.

The first stance that one will be learning in this art would be the horse stance. The horse stance is a very crucial stance in this art because it is the stance that one will be assuming most of the time while he is doing his forms. It is also the stance wherein one will be relaxed the most.

Now to do this pose, one has to first stand upright and spread his legs apart shoulder width with his hands relaxed. While he is standing, he should then inhale and then exhale while he is lowering himself and bending his legs. Now he should try to just assume that pose for a while and practice until his legs become so strong that he can stay in that position for quite a long time.

Now once he has already learned how to do the horse stance, the next stance that he will be doing is the bow rider stance which is a lunge. After that, he will do a cat stance wherein his back leg will carry majority of the weight. From there, he will practice shifting from one stance to another.

After one has already learned the basic stances, he will be putting them all together in order to do the basic tai chi forms. While doing forms, one will already be incorporating some hand movements as well while shifting stances. The instructor will be the one to teach the students how to do the forms.
