How A Rockville MD Dental Office Helps Straighten Teeth

By Clayton Maske

A crooked smile can negatively affect your self-esteem - and even make you afraid to smile. Children with crooked teeth are often teased and bullied.

Traditionally, straightening teeth involved braces glued to the teeth, often to the front of the teeth, making them very visible. They have to be worn for one to three years. During that time, there is a long list of foods that have to be avoided, including most kinds of candy, gum, corn chips and hard taco shells, popcorn and pretzels. Not to mention having to break up other food such as burgers or even some kinds of pizza (some dentists even recommend giving up pizza altogether). The glued on brackets make it much harder to keep teeth clean and almost impossible to floss.

Eating forbidden food could make a mess on the brackets and get between them and the teeth. Cleaning the food particles off is hard to do and requires patience young children often don't have. They may still get teased like they did before the braces.

For some people, traditional braces are the only answer, but for most the modern solution is Invisalign. Instead of glued on braces, Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners that are essentially invisible and are removed to eat, drink and clean your teeth.

The aligners do require some care however. Most dentists recommend tea and coffee be avoided. These aligners should be cleaned with mild soapy water rather than toothpaste as well. Even with these restrictions, this option is much easier to deal with than their older counterparts.

If you are unhappy with your smile or your child's smile, then call your Rockville MD dental office to schedule an appointment to talk about teeth straightening options. These days, they do not have to mean ugly and uncomfortable braces.
